I did not plan on unretiring.
When you spend your working life building a career, the fantasy is always the same: you reach the finish line, hang up your boots, tend your garden, and never worry about cash flow again.
Then reality knocks on your door.
Sitting out here on our homestead in Silesia, surrounded by soil and trees, life is good. We are completely debt-free. But living as a retiree on a tight monthly budget does not feel comfortable. Prices keep climbing, you want to take care of your family, you want to help your kids, and you realize very quickly that pinching pennies every week is no way to spend the years you worked so hard to earn.
So I decided to get back on track.
I was not looking to build another corporate empire, and I certainly was not interested in working eighty hours a week. I just wanted dependable, honest income.
Along the way, I made some mistakes, bought things I should not have bought, and eventually developed one simple filter that protects my wallet from every shiny object online.
If you are retired, staring at a dwindling nest egg, or trying to rebuild after an unexpected career disruption, here is the raw truth about what works, what to avoid, and the single test you should run before spending a single dollar.
Twenty-Five Years at the Top, Gone in a Flash
To understand why I am so cautious today, you have to know where I came from.
I started in direct sales and network marketing way back in 1982. In the late 1990s, I helped pioneer the European market for a major wellness brand. For twenty-five years, I stood at the very top of that company.
That business gave my family an incredible life. We lived in New Zealand, Australia, and Switzerland. My two daughters went to top schools. For two and a half decades, weekly, punctual commissions funded total independence. I believed that foundation was permanent.
Then corporate mergers and buyouts rolled in. Suits who never spoke to a customer took over the boardroom. Almost overnight, compensation plans were butchered, payments were slashed by as much as ninety percent, and the business I spent twenty-five years building was wiped out.
I was left with virtually nothing from a quarter-century of loyalty.
My motto was forged in that fire: There is no free lunch, and if there is, you are the menu.
When you realize that corporate promises can vanish with the stroke of a pen, you stop looking for saviors. You realize that the only person responsible for your security is you.
The Shiny-Object Trap That Almost Got Me
When we bought our farm here in Silesia to focus on organic homesteading, I stepped away from the business world entirely. But as our retirement budget squeezed tighter, I started poking around online to see what modern tools existed to rebuild cash flow.
That was a mistake at first.
The internet today is a minefield of shiny objects. Every twenty-something kid in a rented sports car has a course to sell you. They promise push-button wealth, automated millions, and zero effort.
I fell for a few of them. I bought software subscriptions I did not need, looked at affiliate offers that turned out to be empty shells, and burned money on things that delivered a fraction of what was promised on the sales page.
About twelve months ago, I drew a line in the sand. I quit buying the hype. I stopped throwing money at quick-fix promises. I decided that if I was going to put my time into anything, it had to pass the strict filter of a man who has seen forty years of business cycles.
The Email I Almost Deleted
A few months ago, an email landed in my inbox. It was an invitation to watch a replay explaining a traffic system called Traffic Maestro.
Normally, that goes straight into the trash folder. I was not looking for a new business to join. But curiosity got the better of me, so I clicked the link and watched.
What I saw caught my attention. Not because someone was yelling about getting rich overnight, but because of what was missing.
There was no fake urgency. There were no rented sports cars. There was just straightforward training, practical software tools, and two founders who have been showing up live on Zoom five days a week since 2016.
Then I ran the one test that matters most.
The One Test: Look for the People Who Are Still There
Here is the secret the online marketing world does not want you to know.
Most "make money online" programs are built on churn and burn. The company launches with massive hype, affiliates make noise for ninety days, everyone realizes the product has no real utility, and within six months, the leaders pack up and move to the next shiny launch.
So here is the test I use now before I spend a single cent:
I do not look at the people who joined yesterday. I look for the people who joined three, five, or eight years ago, and I check if they are still there.
When I looked into the Home Business Academy (HBA), I started recognizing names and faces of people who had been members for years. They were not bouncing from deal to deal. They were still using the funnel builder to run their local businesses. They were still attending the morning mastermind calls. They were still earning recurring income from customers they introduced years prior.
If people stay for years in an industry notorious for ninety-day lifespans, that tells you something critical: the products actually work, the founders keep their word, and the business model has integrity.
Three Simple Checks You Can Use This Week
If you are trying to replace a corporate salary or supplement a tight retirement budget, use these three rules to evaluate any opportunity:
1. Check the Retention, Not the Hype
Ignore the sales page testimonials recorded five minutes after someone bought the course. Ask: Are ordinary members sticking around six months later? If people cancel their subscription after thirty days, your residual income dies with it.
2. Run the Commission Math
Most affiliate models pay ten to thirty percent. That means to make $2,000 a month, you have to hunt down dozens or hundreds of new buyers every single month. Look for high-commission platforms. In a model where eighty percent of every dollar goes back to the affiliate, two referrals put you in profit, and just twenty-four referrals can create a full-time income of over $3,000 a month. That is math that makes sense for real life.
3. Check Who Runs the Ship
Are the owners hiding behind a corporate shell company or an outsourced support desk? Or do they show up in person, live, every single day to answer questions and help their people? Leadership reveals itself in consistency, not slick marketing videos.
An Honest Word on Who This Is NOT For
I believe in total transparency. If you read my recent post on what to do when severance runs out, you know I do not sugarcoat things.
This path is not for someone who needs rent money by this Friday.
If you are in total financial triage with zero runway, go pick up a local part-time job or freelance gig immediately. Building a dependable residual income stream takes consistent work, a willingness to learn a few basic digital skills, and a little patience. Anyone telling you that you can sign up today and sit back while money rains from the sky is treating you like the menu.

Where to Start If You Are Open to Taking a Look
If you are tired of the shiny objects and want to see how an honest, low-overhead system actually works, I recommend reading a short book written by my business partner, Paul Hutchings.
It is called Residual Income Shortcuts.
In the book, Paul breaks down how one simple mathematical shift took him from living in a single-wide mobile home to becoming completely retired in his early forties. More importantly, it shows you why ninety-five percent of traditional home businesses are built backwards, and how a team of sixty people can earn you more than a team of six hundred in typical corporate network marketing.

No high-pressure sales calls, no phone tag, and no nonsense. Read through it, check the numbers for yourself, and see if the logic makes as much sense to you as it did to me.
If you ever decide to join our community and partner up with me down the road, full disclosure: I earn an eighty percent commission (up to $128 a month per customer). That is how an honest affiliate business works. But whether you ever work with me or not, the lessons inside that book will save you months of frustration and thousands of dollars in wasted trial and error.
Until next time, keep your feet on the ground and keep things simple.
